Q: What are the most common preventable childhood accidents?
A: Based on 2003 data, the top five causes of injury related deaths to children were motor vehicle occupancy (29%),
airway obstruction (16%), drowning (15%) pedestrian (12%), and fire/burn (9%). For more information related to
accidental childhood injury and prevention, please visit our partner Safe Kids Worldwide
Q: Is my child likely to be abducted by a stranger?
A: According to a 2002 report from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, 115 children
tragically experienced “stereotypical kidnappings”, defined as abductions perpetrated by a stranger or slight acquaintance
and involving a child who was transported 50 or more miles, detained overnight, held for ransom or with the intent to keep
the child permanently or, killed. In 44% of the “stereotypical kidnappings” the child was killed or never
found. This equates to 51 children or approximately one child per state, per year. These “stereotypical kidnappings”,
are the group of very unfortunate incidents that the media uses to create an unnecessary fear in parents, caregivers, and
children. If one analyses other risk areas that contribute to child injury or fatality, the risk of a “stereotypical
kidnapping” is not very high.
